I met Kate in the wondrous world of weddings here in New York City. As the co-leader, now leader of our local Tuesday Together chapter, she is all about support and inclusivity in our community. It’s that sense of care and encouragement that ground her photography. Well, that and an eye for vibrant color, amazing creativity and genuine emotions. It’s been so great getting to know Kate over the last few years, and exciting to see her growth! Without further ado, I am thrilled to shine some well deserved light onto Kate Bancroft-Wells of KATE ALISON PHOTOGRAPHY!

Kate, what was the path that led you to become a photographer?

Since I was young, I had an interest in photography. As a teenager, I decided I wanted to become a wedding planner, so I took a two year hospitality program. Then decided to major in Convention & Event Management. If that was not enough, throughout high school and college, I also worked my way up full-time in retail management. Thankfully a counselor suggested I look into a career with Disney (based on my love for the Jonas Brothers). I applied for (and was accepted into) the Disneyland College Program as a Photopass Photographer.

Oh, what is that?

It’s an in-park location and character photographer. Even though I didn't have much photo experience at the start, my skills grew quickly and I was asked to join a small team capturing special events. This also included private parties, ceremonies, international dance troupes, marching bands, and other resort performers. After five years in California, I moved to NYC. I was not sure where I wanted my photo career to go, so I took a few years off. However, in 2015 I decided to jump back into photography, dabbling in headshots, and portraits, before realizing weddings were my favorite. That’s when I officially started my business.

What excites you about weddings?

Capturing pure, candid joy is my favorite thing to do. It's the reason I loved working for Disney so much! It's also why I love working in weddings so much. They are full of the most loving, intimate, and pure moments. It’s such a perfect fit. The best thing about weddings now is that couples are really injecting their personalities, hobbies, and interests into their celebrations. So many couples are then tossing antiquated traditions to the side. I'm also passionate about supporting fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community after the long fight for equal marriage rights.

What do you look for in a couple?

Obviously I want to work with couples who are excited about my work and colorful style. But it is also important for me to connect with them as people over common values and shared interests.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?

One time a local wedding planner saw one of my photos and said she knew it was mine before she even saw my name! That was the first time I felt like I had finally nailed my signature vibrant look.

What do you desire for your business?

Being my own boss has been a lifelong goal. So continuing to have the freedom to express myself creatively, while supporting my amazing clients and local community is always top of mind.

What are you grateful for?

I'm grateful to have a wonderfully loving wife who supports all my ambitions, the sweetest dog, and to follow my dreams in my favorite city.

Any recent victories or cause for celebration?

My photography company has expanded to include photo booth rentals! It's something I've always wanted to do. I'm looking forward to providing some fun, as well as capture memories to my couples and their guests in an enhanced way.
