Vendors I Love: KRISTY MAY PHOTOGRAPHY
I met Kristy a few years ago at a wedding vendor networking event. In fact, I seem to remember our paths crossing a lot! Last year as new member of the New York chapter of WIPA, I was happy to see her smiling face at one of my first meetings. Even though we’ve yet to work a wedding together, I really love Kristy’s work. She has an amazing eye. And whether shooting in black and white or vibrant color, she always captures the moment. I guess that’s what a background in photojournalism can do. Without further ado, I am so excited to share more from KRISTY MAY!
What was the path that led you to become a photographer?
I started photographing my family and friends when I got a "real" SLR film camera at 15. I learned to print my own black and white photos in a community darkroom in Covington, Louisiana. In college, I worked on the newspaper and studied art. My first wedding was for a friend in 2002 in NYC. I shot only 4 rolls of black and white film and totally missed the kiss!
After college, I got a job working at a small newspaper in Louisiana where I met my husband, Ryan, and became a photojournalist. Due to Hurricane Katrina we moved to NYC where I worked for a National Geographic photographer and got a masters in digital photography from The School of Visual Arts.
I started photographing weddings full time in 2010. Never did I dream I'd end up in NYC photographing weddings for my career! But I wouldn't change anything.
What excites you about weddings?
I like guiding a family or couple through the experience, especially in terms of an elopement, and documenting it through their eyes. It can be a stressful day. I just like being helpful and preserving the moments.
What do you look for in a couple?
I like working with couples who are a bit shy or worried about having their photos taken. My approach is customized to bring out the natural way they interact with each other, full of patience and does not force cheesy poses on them. And I love fashion and architecture, so great styling and locations are always welcome!
What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?
The best compliment I've ever received is when a couple (or their parents) tell me that I was unobtrusive, but always in the right place to get the photo.
What do you desire for your business?
It is probably a lifelong process, but I want to keep working on making images I love and refining what that means. I love black and white images, and there is much more I want to experiment with stylistically.
Any recent victories?
My daughter finally learned to ride a bike! It has been a struggle, but she did it! Now we just need to get ourselves bikes!
And because today is GRATITUESDAY, what are you grateful for?
The couples who let me into their lives and allow me to do what I love. I was really aware of this before the pandemic, but I am so much more grateful when a wedding or elopement can happen now. Never in my life did I think the simple act of gathering could become so complex.
