I met Sharon as fellow members of the New York City WIPA chapter. You could always hear her excitement, passion and skill when she spoke about her business. Without further ado, I’m happy to spotlight, Sharon Becker of SB Beauty!

What was the path that led you to become a make-up artist?

I graduated from NYU with a degree in drama and minor in art history, and I didn't want to wait tables. Macy's was hiring for the holiday season, and they gave me a job at the Prescriptives cosmetics counter. I loved it! I hustled sales, and they kept me for the post-holiday season! Four years at Macy's, then four years at Bergdorf Goodman with the same brand, and I was hooked. Of course, I took a 7 year break working administratively in the events industry between my time at the makeup counter, and hanging out my own shingle. Now it's been 10 years and I love it more each day.

What excites you about weddings?

I like any chance to put makeup on people, and there are lots of people who want makeup at a wedding! The time frame suits me: lots of planning, and then a full day of fun. I then stay friends with my clients through social media and annual Valentine's cards. I also love the variety of people I get to meet and work on in a bridal suite - age ranges, so many beautiful shades of skin, and lots of personalities.

What do you look for in a couple?

Unlike other vendors, I don't have long relationships with my clients. So they are really looking for me! They want to find an artist who fits their style of beauty from "natural enhanced" to "soft glam.” As well as the vibe of their day (high vibe, low key).

What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?

This ended up being my business motto, but it was from a lovely past roommate who asked me to do her wedding makeup before I even started SB Beauty. She told me that I made her look like herself on her best day. Another client, who is a therapist, told me that she found me to be an emotionally responsive makeup artist!

What do you desire for your business?

To do so well in business that I can buy an island. You think I'm kidding - I'm not! I'll do this by continuing to offer the very best in both artistry and service, and having an open heart and loving attitude. And then in the off-season, I’ll be recharging on my island!

What are you grateful for?

The privilege of working for myself, and maintaining the lifestyle I love.

Any recent victories or cause for celebration?

Yep - made it through COVID with my sanity and health intact! I also have a TOTALLY new kit and upgraded my artistry. Plus I made too many major business upgrades to mention! I used my downtime wisely, and I was very lucky to be able to do so.
