Vendors I Love: PLUME and FLOURISH
I first met Caroline at the Whitney Museum. We worked on events together, but I had no idea that she was so talented in calligraphy. I saw her place cards first hand, and then I just started stalking on social media. I’m so glad she stepped into her talent and is so supported by her community. Without further ado, let’s shine some well deserved light onto Caroline David from PLUME & FLOURISH!
What was the path that led you to become a calligrapher?
Working at the Whitney Museum in their Special Events department, one of the first events I worked was a dinner celebrating the opening of the exhibition Carmen Herrera. We hired a calligrapher to do the place cards. Watching her work so carefully to construct each letter with purpose was mesmerizing. I have always had nice handwriting, but this was something completely different, something truly magical. It wasn't until the need arose a few months later when I was asked to write out the place cards for the Whitney's Art Party did I start teaching myself dip pen calligraphy. After that, it was the one aspect of working events that ever got me truly excited, so a few years later I left the Museum and began my own company in the hopes of capturing that same magical quality for others.
What excites you about weddings?
It's so exciting to be able to work with couples leading up to their event, getting to know them, and getting to work on such a beautiful moment that is shared with so many other people in their lives. Being just one piece of a larger puzzle leading up to and on their day is something I never take for granted.
What do you look for in a couple?
I look for individuals who know who they are and what they love. There is something so intriguing about people who are able to express themselves in an authentic manner, particularly when it comes to something as personal as their wedding day.
What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?
I had a client once tell me that having me write out everything made all the difference when it came to welcoming guests to their dinner table. Too often I hear, "I can just have this printed and done for cheaper," and I will admit that calligraphy can be an extra cost some couples don't see the point in spending. But if you have the ability to do so, hire a calligrapher. Trust me when I say, having someone's name written out by hand, whether it's on the envelope holding the invitation being sent to their home, or the place card on the dinner table, it truly makes a difference. There is something innately beautiful and powerful in recognizing that another human being took the time to write your name by hand.
What do you desire for your business?
My biggest desire is to continue to work with incredible clients, to grow my reach so I can find new audiences who may come to appreciate my work, and to continue the legacy of calligraphy as an art form. I hope that even if you never have the opportunity to hire me, that in some way my work inspires and brings joy.
What are you grateful for?
I am incredibly grateful that I have parents and friends who completely support me pursuing my passion. I don't know where I would be without them and the strength they give me.
Any recent cause for celebration?
My sister just had a little girl, Quinn, and I am very excited to be an Auntie again!
