Vendors I Love: EMPANADAMN

I met Brent from Empanandamn a few years ago. It may have been at a Tuesday Together meeting or possibly an industry event. While he’s a quiet guy, his music speaks volumes. He tends to really take in the room and play the PERFECT song, at the perfect time. I’ve seen it at fashion shows, in Zoom meetings, and when people just need to get on the dance floor and let loose! I am beyond thrilled to shine a little light on Brent Fierro of EMPANADAMN.

What was the path that led you to become a DJ?

Music is my obsession. Growing up shy, music was how I connected with others. Through DJing I was able to socialize and have purpose while remaining low key. That passion for music gave me the confidence to be — giving way to organizing and promoting radio, parties, raves, and concerts during my years in Austin, Texas. Soon friends from the community were getting engaged and by default I was their go-to DJ. Through the years I garnered more experience with high profile gigs. I never saw myself as a "wedding" or "corporate DJ,” much less a business. I was just a musically flexible club DJ, who happened to be receptive to playing different environments. Thanks to the encouragement of kind professionals who work in these industries, a light bulb went on in my thick head and here we are. Better late than never!

What excites you about weddings?

Being able to play a music mix that reflects the couple, family, friends, generations, cultures, and identities. All with the goal of partying their faces off in the spirit of love. In particular it's always a highlight when parents and elders light up the dance floor, whether it be to Motown, Whitney, Britney, Disclosure, or Cardi B. Their festive energy is infectious, and a sight to behold!

What do you look for in a couple?

Couples that dote over their music preferences and express an eagerness to RAGE at their wedding. I encourage couples to make the day's playlist their very own. I dare them to select tunes that are meaningful to them, even if others may be unfamiliar. Also, I drive home the point of what they don't want being as important as what they do. We're often in agreement that we prefer the DJ to STFU on the mic, and not play cheesy music.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?

An uncomfortable compliment would be when guests have said, "I wish you DJed my wedding..." I don't know how to respond to that. A more deliberate show of appreciation is when couples or clients stay in contact and our business relationship blossoms into friendship. They're often my biggest cheerleaders and remind me why I do what I do.

What do you desire for your business?

To serve overlooked groups that could use some honoring and positive support. This includes children's groups, the elderly, caregivers, teachers, and health care workers.

What are you grateful for?

I'm deeply grateful to find open minds that are happy to share and support each other in our wedding community. One group that brings me life on a consistent basis is the NYC chapter of Tuesdays Together. Shout out all my peeps there!

Any recent cause for celebration?

A new administration(!), vaccinations rolling out, and everyone looking forward to brighter days spent together. Until then I'll be DJing virtually on Twitch and Zoom!
