Vendors I Love: MON AMIE EVENTS

I met Mona at a wedding at the Wythe Hotel a few years ago and just loved her vibe. Thankfully our paths have crossed recently. Super excited to shine the light and share the joy of Mona Dehghan of MON AMIE EVENTS!

What was the path that led you to become a DJ?

When I was a student at UC Berkeley studying English Literature, I volunteered at the college radio station KALX. Immediately I felt I'd found my tribe. They trained students to DJ. My mentor had a Saturday night gig at the Ruby Room in Oakland and she ended up passing onto me. I started DJing there when I was just 20 years old. And did every Saturday night there for 4 years before moving to the UK for grad school.

I got my grad degree in Radio at University of London, Goldsmiths College.  I wanted to be John Peel when I grew up.  I've never stopped DJing since I learned how 24 years ago.  Music is my ultimate passion and DJing feels like the best way for me to connect with people. Each set is like a conversation or interaction that is 100% in the moment and never again recreated.  It really does feel special each time for me, so it never really gets old!

What excites you about weddings?

Firstly, the overall feeling of joy and love at weddings is the best environment to make people dance. Rather than at a bar where people are too cool or nonplussed.

I also love playing to a varied demographic of people, from grandparents, to parents, teachers, siblings, college friends, and so on.  I love putting the disparate influences in someone's life together for the ultimate dance party. Whether that be cross generational hits everyone loves, or playing classic favorites, back to back with a current hit.  Oscillating between eras and genres to create a cohesive sound is my favorite part of DJing. There's no more varied group of people partying together than at a wedding!

What do you look for in a couple?

We love working with couples who are passionate about music. Our best gigs are working with a couple to make sure their more niche tastes are represented - in addition to the tried and tested dance floor fillers.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?

Might sound cheesy, but every compliment is truly appreciated.  That said, when a gaggle of fabulous Aunties run to the dancefloor that always feels like a personal victory.

What do you desire for your business?

I love offering a service to make other music fans feel they can trust a DJ won't embarrass them, or go rogue and just play cookie cutter wedding hits all night. It feels amazing to hear a couple say we created their dream soundtrack and could've dance all night. On the other side, I also value sharing this opportunity with other talented and likeminded women and queer DJs.

What are you grateful for?

The NYC wedding vendor community.  I love the connections made over the years; it really feels like a strong and supportive network where we're all referring business and serving as a resource when needed.  I'm truly grateful for you taking the time to highlight other vendors with your blog, Hope!

Oh gosh, my pleasure, truly! Any recent cause for celebration?

Every day is worth celebrating, I don't take anything for granted!

I heartily agree, sister! Please contact, check out, and follow MON AMIE EVENTS online:
