I met Jason a few years ago working on a micro wedding at Wythe Hotel. As great planners do, he kept all the plates spinning in the air, as he moved gracefully between the couple, the hotel staff and the guests. When I arrived, he gave me the support I needed to join in, but also the space I require to do my best work. I love his desire for inclusivity, and that’s he’s a fellow theatre practitioner (well, former for me!). I am also excited that our paths continue to cross. Without further ado, I’d love to shine a big ol’ spotlight on JASON MITCHELL KAHN!

What was the path that led you to become a wedding planner?

I was really all about gravitating to what I loved, once I discovered it! I moved to New York to write for the theatre and was simultaneously working in restaurants, and eventually events. I was lucky enough to have a career that exposed me to working on all types of events at the same time as I while seeing some productions of my plays take place. Weddings allowed me to merge everything I liked into one. I view weddings as an opportunity to tell a couple’s story through the show we write together and produce.

What excites you about weddings?

That every couple is different so the job is never monotonous. Every love story is a new opportunity to ideate, collaborate and create. I love getting as personal as possible and feeling like a part of the family.

What do you look for in a couple?

Most important is that the three of us have a connection. As competent as I feel in event planning, it’s crucial that the clients and I have the right chemistry for me to be a part of one of the most important days of their lives.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve ever received?

One mother told me if she could she would run away with me, she would. As a gay, man that felt like high praise!

What do you desire for your business?

To continue to attract a diverse clientele, and to work to employ vendors that espouse my company ideals. At JMK & Co. we work with brides, grooms and those who don’t identify with titles. We celebrate all kinds of love and strive to be as inclusive as possible. We have no tolerance for homophobia, anti-semitism or racism. I only want to work with vendors who feel the same.

What are you grateful for?

That the experiment of leaving a bigger events company to go out on my own worked out. It’s much more gratifying to hustle this much knowing the work is for me, my team and the vendors we seek. I’m also grateful to be in a place where I can say ‘no.’

Any recent victory?

Does making it through running a wedding planning business during a global pandemic count?

Sure does!

Well, great! Then, I feel victorious being on the other side with so many wonderful couples booked for this year, next and even 2023!
